Chhattisgarh accommodation - Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat
Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat
Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat, (BJR), is situated in the Maikal Hills of north-western Chhattisgarh. For those who make it this far off the beaten track to explore village life at grass roots level, it is simply ‘Sunny’s Place’ after your host, guide and soon-to-be-friend.
The simple accommodation is made up of nine fan-cooled rooms with en-suite where a shower with a jug and bucket of water seems a real luxury after visiting the indigenous Gond and Baiga tolas (villages) in the surrounding countryside. Meals of freshly cooked Chhattisgarhi cuisine prepared from local produce, including some fruit and vegetables grown in the BJR garden, are served in an open-sided shady pavillion with views of the hills during the day and nothing but the stars at night. The staff come from nearby communities and don’t speak English or have any formal training but are smiling and willing.
BJR’s nearest neighbour is the 7th - 11th century Bhoramdeo temple complex with beautiful carvings that rival those at well-known Khajuraho and a lotus filled lake that draws worshippers for morning and evening puja when the air is filled with the smell of incense and the sound of chanting. The hills beyond are home to a plethora of bird life with guided walks from the lodge offering sightings of the paradise flycatcher, scarlet minivet, collared scops owl, golden oriel and red crested pochard among others. Wildlife species that have been observed in the area include the wolf, nilgai, dhole, hyena, leopard, porcupine, jungle cat - and even tigers.
