Kumaon accommodation - Shakti Kumaon Village Houses
Shakti Kumaon Village Houses
In three villages of the Kumaon Himalaya Shakti village houses combine the best of a rural homestay with added privacy, excellent service and some good old-fashioned comforts added to the mix. First floor rooms in family homes, with a courtyard or terrced area, have been sympathetically and stylishly converted to provide simple but very comfortable accommodation for those who want to explore the region on foot.
The slate-roofed cottages are taken on a private basis and usually accommodate up to four people in two spotlessly clean rooms, with western loos in an adjoining building. Big welcoming smiles and hot water for a 'bucket shower' are provided on arrival at the end of each day's walk. Power supplies are limited and there are no electrical facilities to speak of but this is more than compensated for by thoughtful touches such as a hot water bottle to warm your bed at night - and a mug of steaming tea in the morning to encourage you to get out of it.
In the evening you are served a Kumaoni meal cooked over the household fire by your hosts while an outdoor breakfast of fruit, muesli or 'masala' omelettes flavoured with a little garlic, onion and chilli fire you up for the day's walk ahead. You don't have to be super-fit and you can walk at your own pace. There's plenty to enjoy from the diverse plantlife and spotting a multitude of birds to glorious views with occasional glimpses of Nanda Devi and meeting people along the way. And when you least expect it a picnic lunch suddenly appears in a scenic spot. Staff are recruited and tranined locally and guests are encouraged to support the local community and culture via the handicrafts and traditional dance performances that are available.
Include private accommodation in village houses on fully inclusive basis, all activities, private guide, chef, driver and vehicle, porters. Minimum 4 night stay.
