Ladakh accommodation - The Ultimate Travelling Camp Chamba Camp Thiksey
The Ultimate Travelling Camp Chamba Camp Thiksey
The Ultimate Travelling Camps offer nomadic luxury and a variety adventures in exceptional locations in India's mountains, deserts, jungles and unexplored countryside. Chamba Camp in Ladakh is no exception. Pitched at the base of Thiksey monastery for a few months over festivals during Ladakh’s short summer the camp is a unique commercial and spiritual partnership; your stay provides a valuable income for the monastery while enjoying a privileged insight into Tibetan Buddhism and local culture.
A half hour’s drive from Leh through a valley dotted with green and views of arid mountains, you’re greeted at the camp gate by a red-robed monk with a welcome blessing. Two large tents house comfortable sofas and a bar in one and a dining room serviced by eight chefs in the other. The dozen or so bedroom tents (there may be up to 20), serviced by your own butler, come with wooden floors, a four-poster bed, colonial-style chest and writing desk. Light-toned fabrics billow from the ceiling and drape the canvas walls, while a huge air-conditioning unit blasts warm air to fend off the night-time chill. The en-suite bathroom isn’t heated but comes with warm fluffy towels, brass sink and western loo.
During your stay (a minimum of three nights) excellent guides accompany you on gentle walks and bicycle rides in the surrounding quiet countryside to discover fascinating monuments, monasteries enriched with ancient art forms, fairs and festivals or to more remote locations by private vehicle, sustained by picnics that magically appear in a picturesque spot. There are options to try your hand at archery, raft on the Indus or watch a game of polo. Or simply curl up in your ‘tent with a view’ - to one side the Himalayas, the other the Karakorum and, straight ahead, Thiksey monastery itself, where a dozen storeys of white buildings are packed on top of one another, perched on a hill a few minutes down the road.
