Chettinad accommodation - The Bangala
A small family owned and run heritage hotel The Bangala has been known for its warm hospitality since 1917. Originally the private residence of the same prominent Chettiar family the house was converted into a hotel in the 1990s and extended to provide 21 simple but charming rooms.
Arriving here is like stepping back in time and the ‘club atmosphere’ of old still permeates, the building’s history is displayed on the walls and rooms are decorated with Burmese teak pillars, Belgian mirrors and Chettinad mosaic work – no two rooms are the same. The Bangala is run as a household and a home, rather than as a formal hotel, making guests immediately feel welcome.
Meenakshi Meyyappan is a famed chef in India and has written books on her family’s and the Chettinad region’s distinctive cuisine and cookery demonstrations are an opportunity for foodies to learn more. An organic vegetable garden providing produce for the kitchen lies beyond the swimming pool in the walled garden.
From The Bangala you can walk into Karaikudi's busy market square, and explore the antique shops and fascinating architecture of Chettinad.
