Wayanad accommodation - Tranquil - A Plantation Hideaway
Tranquil - A Plantation Hideaway
915m (3000 ft) high up in the Western Ghats Tranquil is hidden among the bushes and trees of Kappamudi Estate, a 160 hectare (400 acre) working coffee plantation near Sulthan’s Battery in the Wayanad district of north Kerala. Your hosts are Victor, Jini, family and dogs who welcome you to their 1930’s planters bungalow. With the addition of modern amenities and a swimming pool, Tranquil is somewhere between a homestay and small hotel.
Meals at Tranquil are a wonderfully social affair when guests gather at a large table as part of the extended family to dine on grandmother’s secret recipes and continental dishes made from home grown fruits and vegetables. Of course, there is plenty of coffee, hand-picked, roasted and ground on the estate.
Six spacious and comfortable but plain rooms in the guest annex share a long verandah that overlooks the exotic gardens and forests but for the ultimate retreat take one of the two tree houses. Sturdily constructed around thick branches from natural materials they disappear among the leaves 10 meters (35 feet) above the ground and have the most fabulous views of the forested hills.
The estate is ideal for walks of varying lengths along 12 marked trails, hiking up to the neolithic Eddakkal caves or heading out to waterfalls in the surrounding area. Jeep safaris in Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary to spot elephant, deer and monkeys or exursions to waterfalls and the town can be arranged by the family. Alternatively, stretch out in a hammock or take a dip in the pool and try spotting some of the 100 or so species of birds that have been recorded here.
