Kathmandu accommodation - Hotel Yak and Yeti
Hotel Yak and Yeti
Huge gardens around the Yak and Yeti belie the fact that you are just a few minutes’ walk from Kathmandu'sbusy Durbar Square making this hotel very convenient for heading out on your own to explore some of its temples and shrines. Though the hotel does not live up to its 5 star status, there is a great sense of history here to be enjoyed if you are not too fussed about some of the aging facilities.
The Yak and Yeti was founded by Boris Lissanevitch, a former ballet dancer, master chef, tiger hunger, fighter pilot and trapeze artist who came to Kathmandu from Russia in the 1950’s and using his great charm, persuaded the king to gradually allow tourists to visit this formerly isolated kingdom. The success of his restaurant led to the creation of a hotel in 1977 which was extended 12 years later to provide a total of 270 guest rooms. The majority have been recently refurbished and the garden facing rooms are light and airy. You can still dine on borscht and chicken Kiev cooked to original recipes in The Chimney fine dining restaurant but there are plenty of other good value options at the hotel's Sunrise restaurant and the bar. There's also a spa, casino and swimming pool - and the staff is super and offers friendly service.
