Jodhpur accommodation - Umaid Bhawan Palace
Umaid Bhawan Palace
Set in vast gardens and grounds the Umaid Bhawan Palace is a Jodhpur landmark that can be seen from miles around. It was the last of the great palaces to be built in India, a project created by the maharaja of Jodhpur to provide employment for his impoverished and drought stricken people for 15 years, from 1928-1943. Designed by the British Edwardian architect, Lanchester, and conceived on a massive scale, it is a combination of eastern Rajput and western Art Deco styles that flaunts power and luxury.
With 347 rooms this was one of the largest private residences in the world, and the ex-maharaja still retains his own private wing and grounds. Everything about the property represents grandeur and elegance, with large hallways, high ceilings and marble staircases that lead to 64 luxurious rooms and suites. Each has a view over the gardens and is Art Deco inspired, furnished with heavy brocades, thick rugs and period furniture, while having the latest modern amenities.
The wood panelled Trophy Bar and lovely colonnaded veranda are ideal for an aperitif before dinner. Indian and continental cuisine prepared to recipes from the royal kitchen is served in Risala, where life size portraits of the maharajas gaze down at diners, while international grilled dishes are taken al fresco at Sunset Pavillion. There are also many wonderful quiet spots for private dining.
Other facilities include both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, a health club and Jiva Spa.
