Rajasthan villages accommodation - Amanbagh
Well hidden in a valley of the Aravalli Hills and with only abandoned villages as neighbours it’s hard to believe that Amanbagh lies within India’s well-travelled golden triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.
The rough potholed road to Amanbagh is typical of rural Rajasthan but enter the walled compound once a staging area for royal hunts into the forests (now Sariska national park) and you’ll be more than glad you came.
In stark contrast to the surrounding craggy landscape Amanbagh has lush green gardens dotted with fruit and palm trees and a huge aquamarine swimming pool (cool in summer but heated in winter) that you won’t want to waste any time leaping in to.
Local stonemasons crafted this modern day Mughal style palace in warm sandstone and pink marble, its walls topped with cupolas and domes and shaded courtyards contained within. Understated luxury pervades throughout with enormous bathtubs carved from single blocks of Udaipur marble, Bose sound systems, king size beds and spacious living areas in all the suites. Some also have their own private swimming pool and garden. Dining is world class, there’s a fabulous spa and well-stocked library.
The countryside around Amabagh is ripe for exploring on foot, by camel and horseback or open jeep. With only your guide and wizened temple-keepers for company you can discover the ruins of forts, palaces and bazaars some deserted overnight, legend says, after being cursed by a court holy man. Alternatively, hike into the hills for a picnic with a spectacular view, enjoy bird watching on nearby lakes or take a safari in Sariska National Park.
