Rajasthan villages accommodation - Fort Barli
A stay at Fort Barli is a delightful way to experience rural Rajasthan. Pretty much in the middle of nowhere off the road between Japiur and Udaipur it offers and authentic Indian experience you can’t beat.
Driving through the arched entrance you are transported into another world. The small fort has been owned by the family for 16 generations, descendents of the Rathore dynasty of legendary Rajput warriors. The current incumbents have sympathetically restored the fort in recent years to create an intimate heritage hotel styled with traditional Rajasthani decor, including some silver plated furniture, chandeliers and wall paintings, and modern additions such as air-conditioning, en-suite bathrooms and a small swimming pool in a bastion. The nearby telephone masts are an ugly reminder of present but shut your eyes to these and you could be back in the 17th century. Beneath the fort village life continues as it has done for hundreds of years and a walk down the narrow lanes reveal potters, cobblers, jewellers and carpet weavers at work. Farmers eke a living from the surrounding countryside and a trip to Dev Sagar lake which attracts winter migrants is a must for bird watchers and nature lovers alike.
