Rajasthan villages accommodation - Royal Camp, Nagaur

Royal Camp, Nagaur

For a few weeks a year a large tented camp is pitched within the walls of Ahichattragarh fort in Nagaur, reminiscent of the ‘shikar’ hunting camps of old.

A venture of the Maharaja of Jodhpur, the Royal Camp is sited on an old polo ground within the fort to provide the additional accommodation in this rural area during the Nagaur Cattle Fair and the World Sufi Festival, 135km to the north of Jodhpur. This is festival ‘glamping’ Indian-style, the tents pitched close together in lines with military precision.  Each tent is lined with locally made block printed fabrics with contrasting fabrics on the twin beds, there is a small dressing area and a couple of chairs outside at the entrance to your tent. When the running hot water supply in your attached shower room runs out a bearer will bring you some in a bucket.

The fort itself is fabulous for exploring. The original 5th century mud fort was rebuilt and extended many times to create a vast complex of palaces and pavilions, water tanks, rills and fountains that have been painstakingly restored over the last 20 years after decades of neglect. Talk a walk on the gigantic ramparts to watch the sun rise, or relax with a cocktail at sunset before heading to the Akbari Mahal for a candlelit dinner. Enchanting!
