BEST TIME TO GO ON A SAMBURU CAMEL SAFARI

Northern Kenya is a beautiful and thoroughly under-rated area.  Whether after the rains, in June or July when it is lush and bursting with life, or at the end of the dry season in October, it has its only particular brand of beauty. July to August can be pretty cold.

December to March are the warmest months and usually the driest. The scenery is always lovely, and this is a place you visit for more than just the wildlife, however if you are keen to see game, then July to October and January to March are probably the best times.

What does a day on this safari look like?

After breakfast you will depart early from camp on your mobile walking safari with camels.

You will have riding camels with you and these can be ridden when you wish and also carry refreshments for the walk. The walking is done during the coolest parts of the day, usually leaving around 7:30 and arriving into camp for a refreshing cold drink and lunch at around midday.

The pack camels with your camp will have taken a more direct route arriving in camp ahead of you and setting up your tents and hot showers.

After lunch you can relax in the cool shade of acacia trees or enjoy a short loop walk with one of your guides. In the evening, hot showers are offered before drinks by the fire and a three-course dinner under the stars. With your feet up and a cool drink in your hand, you are reminded how simple true luxury really is.

Adventure & simple luxury in the bush

Accommodation is in private tents, with comfortable mattresses, crisp linens, hot showers, cool drinks and delicious food.

It is the perfect way to unplug from busy lives and reconnect with nature under African skies.

After the last few days on foot, you’ll be ready for some luxury and pampering. We’d highly recommend bolting on a few days in one of the many beautiful lodges in the area.

Remaining horizontal is 100% an option, and well deserved – swim in the pool, enjoy a massage by the river, read a book on your own private verandah. Just take some time to relax and unwind before you head home.

Camel Safari (FAQs) Need to Know

Do I need to have a reasonable level of fitness to go on a camel safari?

This trip is for the moderately fit who are happy to rough it and see a different side of Africa. The walking is done during the coolest parts of the day, usually leaving around 7:30 and breaking for lunch at around midday. The accompanying escort of camels are there to help, and will gladly support a weary walker on their backs where the terrain allows.

Are camel safaris suitable for children?

We can offer a range of walking safaris, custom built to suit the needs of you and your family. We’d suggest the longer walking safaris would be most suitable for older kids. The camels do carry all the gear from camp to camp so can take the strain somewhat but you will probably be covering around 10-15km a day. In some instances, you may prefer a walking safari from a basecamp which allows us to tailor the distances for your family and it adds a level up in comfort returning to your tent each night.
