Wildlife and Beach: with the emphasis on relaxing

The best of Madagascar's wildlife and a place to be pampered

We're getting married and are looking for a beach holiday with a twist. We both love wildlife but not sure we want to do a full-on safari for our honeymoon. We're wondering whether you have any ideas for doing something adventurous, fun and memorable for a couple of days followed by a few days to just kick back. ”

What we suggested and why

With a love of wildlife but the need for a holiday rather than a full-on adventure - we suggested Madagascar, incorporating a couple of days seeing the country - and the lemurs of course - before heading down to Anjajavy Private reserve for a pampered beach break.

To go to Madagascar and not see the lemurs would be a travesty - and while you can and will see lemurs at Anjajavy the experience in Andasibe, and that of the highland rainforest is both completely different and complimentary. Andasibe is the only reliable spot to see (and arguably just as importantly hear) Indry, as well as a host of other endemic Madagascan primates, birds and reptiles. The variety is much greater here than on the coast - but it is not necessarily a place to simply relax in.

Anjajavy could hold its own against any Indian Ocean beach resort but also encompasses miles of deserted coastline and hectares of well-protected forest, abundant with both lemurs and birds. Coastal paths lead to deserted beaches where you can relax with a picnic and a beach all to yourself. The chalets are extremely comfortable and airy and the food excellent. The service is excellent and atmosphere relaxed. We recommend that you spend 4 nights here - using the scheduled light aircraft charter to get to and from Tana.

This trip would give you an excellent overview of what Madagascar has to offer - without having to be endlessly moving.

An inspired choice all round - so pleased that you convinced us to do a short road trip and see a bit of the country first - we'd have hated to miss those Indri! Anjajavy was just what we needed, loads of wildlife around but no compunction to do anything - really beautiful setting and great service. The whole trip felt much longer than 9 days - so many memories to treasure”
