DAY 1 - 2
ULAN BATOR AND THE STEPPE
After a brief stop in the capital, you will head north to the wilderness of Khan Khentii in your private 4x4. Before long you leave the tarmac road and at an unmarked point known only to your driver swing off into the wilderness, to grasslands dotted with gers, the fully mobile yurts of traditional nomadic herders, and your camp in the Upper Tuul Valley.
STEPPE OF THE UPPER TUUL VALLEY
Explore the valley either on foot, horseback or float down the river in an inflatable raft. The meadows are rich with flowers, including carpets of eidelweiss and the Khentii Mountains are covered with larch and birch forests that stretch all the way up to the Russian-Siberian frontier. Although rarely seen, wolves are numerous in the area together with wild boar and moose.
WILD HORSES AT HUSTAI
Transfer to Hustai today, home to the Takhi or Przewalski horse, the only remaining species of true wild horse in the world. In the late afternoon make a game drive with an expert naturalist involved in their conservation; there's a good chance of seeing them as they descend from the mountains at the end of the day to drink and graze in the valley. Along way you may also spot Maral Deer, Mongolian Gazelle and Marmot whose numbers have increased in this protected area.
DAY 5 - 8
THE GOBI DESERT WITH A PRIVATE MOBILE CAMP
Drive to the Gobi to spend the next few days in its massive wide open spaces that stretch to the horizon and beyond. Travelling with your own private camel cart that carries your mobile camp days are dictated by sunrise and sunset with freedom to roam in the wilderness.
DAY 5 - 8
THE GOBI DESERT
Explore the desert on foot, or if you like on horse or camel back. Rocky outcrops harbour Argali Sheep, Siberian Ibex and many bird species including Cinereous Vultures. There are hidden petroglyphs, ancient burial sites and temple ruins, all evidence of past human activity here; you will have the chance too to meet traditioal nomadic herders who migrate in and out of the area with their herds of livestock.
Packing up camp for the last time you will return to the capital for your flight home.
