India's northeast in style

From Calcutta to Assam, Sikkim and Darjeeling

Our general plan is to stay in north east India, go to Darjeeling, maybe by steam train. We don't need luxury every night, but we don't shy it either. ”

What we suggested and why

We suggested starting in Calcutta and staying in a club to offer a retreat from the city and taste of colonial India. Excellent local guides smoothed the way.

We made use of the comprehensive flight network to conveniently reach Kaziranga National Park. Here we recommended elephant back safaris as the perfect mobile hide for bird spotting and getting up close to animals including endangered rhinoceros.

Travelling overland with a private car and driver through Sikkim was recommended for jaw-dropping views of the Himalayas and chance to explore hill towns and their melting pot of different mountain peoples and cultures.

We ended near Darjeeling where a gorgeous tea planter’s bungalow makes a wonderfully comfortable base for walking, visiting the town and taking a steam train high into the hills.
