Kenya: Meru and Laikipia Safari

Family Fun and Freedom Away From The Crowds

looking for a family safari at Easter - we love game but some of us not very good at sitting.... might need to make to mix it up a bit for our over-active teenagers.”

What we recommended - and why

Kenya can get a bad rap for being over-run with tourists - but if you know where to go it is remarkably easy to avoid the masses, and in terms of variety of mammals, birds and scenery it really takes some beating.

Easy access from Europe with multiple carriers in to Nairobi means that you can maximize your time on the ground - and the relative proximity between the varied attractions means that some road transfers, where you get to see a country at street level are possible.

We recommend that you start off your family safari with three days in the game-rich yet little visited Meru NP - lots of opportunity to fish, beautiful scenery and good Africa-style camping. Then head by road, under the shadow of Mount Kenya, through forest and commercial farms to the Laikipia Plateau. Laikipia probably offers the greatest freedom to do exactly what you like (assuming your guide agrees) in Africa - swim in croc-free waterfalls, fly-camp under mossie nets, ride a camel, meet a warrior or track wild dog on foot. A proper wildlife playground.

As you are so close we recommend that you spend your last couple of nights in big-cat (diary) county. The Masai Mara is a specatcle to behold, but as on Laikipia greater freedom can be derived by staying on a private conservancy.
