Kenya can get a bad rap for being over-run with tourists - but if you know where to go it is remarkably easy to avoid the masses, and in terms of variety of mammals, birds and scenery it really takes some beating.
Easy access from Europe with multiple carriers in to Nairobi means that you can maximize your time on the ground. This could be an epic family safari for those that want to leave the crowds behind and get off the beaten track.
Starting the itinerary in the game-rich yet little visited Laikipia Plateau will give you lots of opportunity to fish, beautiful scenery and good Africa-style camping. Then head by road, under the shadow of Mount Kenya, through forest and commercial farms to the Laikipia Plateau. Laikipia probably offers the greatest freedom to do exactly what you like (assuming your guide agrees) in Africa - swim in waterfalls, fly-camp under mossie nets, meet a warrior or track wild dog on foot. A proper wildlife playground.
As you are so close we recommend that you spend your last couple of nights in big-cat (diary) county. The Maasai Mara is a spectacle to behold, but as on Laikipia greater freedom can be derived by staying on a private conservancy.
