Morocco: Fes, Marakech & into the Desert

A privately guided adventure, from the imperial cities to the deserts of the south

I'm planning a trip for my husband's birthday and was thinking of Morocco. There are 5 of us, we'd love to go to the desert and the High Atlas and take the road between Fes, Marrakech and Ouarzazate”

What we recommended and why

The culture and history of the imperial cities combined with the charm and disarming hospitality of the south make Morocco an exceptional country to explore as a family.

From the narrow alleyways of ancient walled cities to the roof top terraces of fortified Kasbahs.

Add to this some of Africa's most breathtaking wilderness in its deserts and mountains and Morocco is hard to beat for a family adventure.

As a highlight, few things top the experience of heading into the deserts or mountains for a few days with your own private camp and one of our superb Berber guides.

This safari began in Marrakech with a small private riad a few hundred metres from Jemaa el Fna as a base for the family. The location made forays into the souks and square a matter of a few minutes walk, while the cool interiors provided a sanctuary once everyone had had their fill.

A glass of mint tea on the roof top was the perfect place to unwind, listening as the screech of swifts blended with the call to prayer.

From Marrakech we planned a stay in a fortified Kasbah at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains and the first taste of rural Morocco. This was about open fires, stunning mountain views and with short walks on winding mountain paths through almond groves and small villages.

Into the wild

From here it was off on a four night private camping safari from the High Atlas to Fes on an itinerary that involved crossing the Tiz n Tichka pass, heading south into the lush Draa Valley, where a private camp was set up, then through Nkob and Tazarine to the dramatic scenery of the desert pistes of Jebel Zireg.

We organised two nights private camping in the desert, the day spent dune surfing, camel riding and walking.

The itinerary finished with a drive through the cedar woods of the Middle Atlas to Fez for two nights.
