Namibia - The Wild North-west

Private Mobile Safari In Koakaveld With True Namibia Experts

We are thinking of Namibia next November but would like to travel on a mobile camping safari as I have just read "An Arid Eden". Is this something you could organise? We might add a flying safari onto the end. I'm getting itchy feet with all this bad weather.”

For people who want to experience something extraordinary in Namibia - and to do so in the company of undisputed experts - there are conservancy safaris. The company has some of the most experienced specialist guides in the country, from its founder and main guide Garth Owen-Smith to Dr Flip Stander, one of the world’s leading experts in lion behaviour. With them you will visit some of the country's largest unfenced wildernesses on the private mobile safari of a life-time.

All too often you can spoil travel surprises by learning too much about what to expect before you travel. But this is safari old-style. So, with the sort of confidence that only comes with real experience, beyond broad brush strokes, each day of your mobile safari will be a surprise, from meeting the local communities who are part owners of this company to exploring esoteric desert-scapes and learning about desert adapted species. For the detail, you really will have to wait and see...

The concept on which these safaris are built is one we applaud heartily - namely combining community conservation with the benefits of a properly run safari business.  And this is done by giving ownership in large part to the Himba and Herero semi-nomadic pastoralists who live in the Puros, Orupembe, Sanitatas, Okonjombe and Marienfluss conservancies.

For this 2 week safari we organised an 11 night private mobile safari in Koakaveld beginning and ending in the coastal town of Swakopmund. The guests flew in and out of Walvis Bay.

The mobile safari was the experience of a life time. Two days spent with Garth was such a privilege. He was truly inspirational. Everywhere we went he was known and was obviously held in high regard. We talked to local farmers who had lost cattle and goats from lion attacks and the local rangers employed to protect the animals. We tracked and found a lioness that they thought had been shot and we had the privilege to assist in fitting a satellite collar to her late one night. We had to lift her into the back of a van and take her to a remote area where we spent 2 hours checking her over. What an experience! The adrenaline still flows at the thought of that night. The camping was very comfortable and when we bush camped the locations were wonderful. We had the most brilliant Bush Chef who cooked fabulous meals over the camp fire - fresh bread every day and even a chocolate cake.”
