Rajasthan: highlights & hideaways

Rajasthan, Agra, Varanasi and Panna in a mix of homestays, heritage hotels and a gorgeous tented camp

We’re thinking of Rajasthan. Obviously we don’t want to miss the big sights, but also want to see the countryside, rural life and village culture. Is Varanasi as unmissable as friends say?”

What we suggested and why

Our own experiences have taught us not to try and do too much in too little time so that you can enjoy each place without getting exhausted; Rajasthan is a huge state and journeys can be long. We suggested concentrating on fewer places or making a longer trip than requested. The clients chose the latter and we recommended having a car and driver at disposal with expert local guides engaged at key places of interest.

Our suggested itinerary began with a homestay in Delhi for a peek into a typical urban  neighbourhood, followed by a good mix of city highlights, forgotten sleepy towns and Rajasthan villages off the beaten track to discover the colour ‘old India’.

We recommended staying in a combination of owner-run properties where the family has long ties with the surrounding area and well-located hotels ideal for exploring independently.

The trip was simply wonderful, everything was better than expected. We had some exceptional guides and insight into how the majority of people live in the small villages. Driving on smaller roads through a maze of people, cows, camels, water buffalos and the myriad of motorcycles driving in all directions requires a special driving skill which our driver made look easy, but which we would never try. Thank you for a wonderful itinerary, choosing great places to stay and for arranging for everything we did and saw. ”
