Tanzania Family adventure

An adventurous blend of private camps, walking and even sleeping in a tree-nest

We are a family of four, two boys aged 15 and 13. They are both experienced campers and hikers! I've been on safari before, but my husband has never camped! I think I want to climb Kilimajaro, run wild in the Serengeti and jump with the Massai!”

What we recommended - and why

Northern Tanzania is hugely exciting for family safaris. While it's home to a number of separate parks, together they form a much larger whole with spectacular and diverse scenery complimenting the extraordinary wildlife. From the baobabs, rivers and grassland of Tarangire, to the spectacular Rift Valley Escarpment at Lake Manyara, the Crater and Highlands of Ngorongoro and of course the enormous wild spaces of the Serengeti.

We arranged for the family to start on the outskirts of Arusha National Park where the views of Mts Meru and Kilimanjaro make an impressive backdrop to the first wildlife sightings.

They then began the safari proper, flying to the far north of the Serengeti, close to the Mara River where the wildebeest migration thunders across the river between July and October. While here they spent a few days on a walking safari with our light mobile camp in the wilderness area (an area game drive vehicles can't access).

From the Serengeti they went south and up into the dormant volcanic peaks of Maasailand staying on the edge of the Ngorongoro conservation area to visit the Crater.

The final leg of the journey took them to Tarangire where for a last finale they spent the night in a specially constructed tree-nest above a waterhole, where - under the light of the moon - elephant herds come in to drink.
