What we recommened - and why
For a family safari with your daughter and 14 and 12 year old grandchildren we recommend a private safari house in the Luangwa. This would facilitate tremedous game-viewing while giving you all space and privacy, a small swimming pool as well as a vehicle and guide at your disposal. You'll also have all the benefits of the main, family-friendly, lodge - where you can eat in the main area and use the large pool where your grandchildren may befriend other kids.
14 and 12 are really the ideal age for a safari, in that you can all undertake a walking-safari (minium age 12) if you wish - this really is a completely different perspective to see the bush from. Having your own vehicle at your disposal means that you can choose to stay out all day, or come back earlier, without worrying about upsetting others.
The Luangwa is not entirely straightforward to get to - generally via Johannesburg up to Lusaka and then an hour-long internal flight to Mfuwe (the South Luangwa hub). Once there however there is plenty to do to keep you all well entertained for a week and there really is no need to go elsewhere. Some animals, notably elephants, hippo and giraffe, will be seen from the comfort of your verandah. The chances of seeing Lion and Leopard are very high - particularly on night drives. There would also be the opportunity to visit a local school, market and village.
A private safari house is somewhat akin to a serviced ski-chalet - the focus is very much on relaxation and fun - and how much game-viewing you choose to do is up to you to decide with your highly qualified guide.
