Vic Falls and Zambezi

Simple camps, great guides and plenty of wildlife

Family holiday for four during the university holidays. I am paying so want it memorable, fun and affordable - would love to see the Victoria Falls and experience a safari”

What we recommended and why

Livingstone, on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls, allows direct access from South Africa, Kenya and Lusaka. There's a good range of accommodation and a tremendous number of activities - from helicopter rides to rafting, bungee-jumping to birding. It's unlikely that you'll all want to do the same things all the time and as Livingstone is fun and safe, it is a great place to pick and choose as you go along rather than have everything pre-arranged.

We suggested three nights in Livingstone, plenty of time to recover from the flight over from Oz and two full days around the Falls to pursue - rafting for Mike, local markets and the National Park for Jane and Louise.

Rather than booking full-board and activities upfront (the norm on safari) we suggested that they spend the three nights in Livingstone, right by the Falls on a B&B basis and retain the ability to make plans as they went along. Our local representative was on hand to help with any bookings and undertake the transfers.

From Livingstone they flew to the Lower Zambezi, leaving after breakfast and getting to the camp for lunch. The Lower Zambezi is a wonderful - especially for families travelling together with teenage or older children. The combination of the numberous activities - game-drives, night-drives, walking safaris, boating canoeing and really good fishing - with excellent game including large numbers of iconic African species such as lion, leopard, hippo, buffalo and of course elephant, ensure that there's very little chance anyone will get bored.

We chose an extremely comfortable camp that isn't ostentatious. Tents are generously proportioned so there is plenty of space and privacy as well as a pool to cool off in. The food is good, the drinks are cold and the emphasis is very much on having a good time. Four nights here gives you three full days and we really wouldn't recomend less given the amount there is to see and do here.

At the end it was a short (approx 20 minute) flight back to Lusaka to connect with the international flight out. You would be hard pushed to fill cram a week full of as many firsts anywhere.

Fantastic! we saw so much and loved the variety of seeing it from the river, on foot and in vehicles - and the different way the game reacted to us. We may have to repeat the once in a life-time trip!”
