Madagascar's Deep South camps - Mandrare River Camp
Mandrare River Camp
Set upon the banks of the Mandrare River opposite the Ifotaka Spiny Forest, Mandrare River Camp offers Madagascar's most authentic safari experience.
With only seven tents and located in the wild south, Mandrare will have an air of familiarity to anyone who has been on a safari in East Africa. The emphasis here is very much on the where you are combined with excellent guiding rather than extraneous additions; no wifi, no ipod docks, no flat screen television. Generously sized tents, each with a private balcony overlooking the river, good food and superb wildlife viewing are the order of the day.
Here lies the opportunity to explore the otherworldly spiny forest, Madagascar's most unique habitat, replete with octopus trees and baobabs, and spend time with Ring-tailed Lemurs and Verreaux's Sifaka amongst others, as well as a plethora of bird species, reptiles and insects.
The area is home to the Antandroy tribe whose villages you can visit and traditional dancing witness in a refreshingly uncontrived setting.
Linked to Tana and Fort Dauphin by a scheduled charter-flight service Mandrare is surprisingly easy to access given its offbeat location and emphasis.
