Etosha camps - Onguma

Onguma

Inspired by the few German forts that are found dotted around Namibia, this lodge is all asymmetrical pale stone cladding, antique doors and simultaneously cool and cosy interiors. Thirteen suites overlook the white reaches of the Etosha Pan and the accompanying camel thorn. The high tower provides a great place to get some perspective on things and see just how big and empty this part of the country really is.

The rooms at The Fort are air-conditioned as well as possessing fireplaces for those frosty nights. They are spread out at intervals that will ensure you can’t hear your neighbour snoring. The distressed wood and mixture of antique and contemporary furniture has been carried through to good effect and it is clear that a lot of thought has been put in here.

Once you’ve managed to tear yourself from the luxuries of the lodge, you will find it quite well placed for exploring Etosha. Game viewing can be done both within the private Onguma Reserve and in the Park itself. Onguma is about as close as you can get to the Namutoni Gate without actually staying in Etosha.

The Fort is certainly intended to be luxurious and stylish and it hits those nails on the head. The Reserve is fenced, and the fences are clearly visible while out on drives so don’t come expecting to be in a wilderness area. If you prefer an experience that is slightly more “bushî, then consider the Onguma Tented Camp or, better still, Onguma Tree Top Camp.
