Tigers, leopard and desert in the wilds of Rajasthan

Compiling a must-see list in Rajasthan is not easy – there are just so many fantastic things to see and do. This area is ideal for any wildlife lover wanting a taste of India's culture. A wonderful place to take off into the jungle in search of the majestic tiger but also spend time taking in the sights and sounds of some of the traditional must-see sights including the magical Taj Mahal at Agra, the holy city of Varanasi and the majestic Amber fort at Jaipur. Or follow the road less travelled and find hidden palaces and mystical off-the-beaten-track temples.

India's Forts and Palaces

Built of red sandstone, and with richly decorated interiors, the fort in Jodhpur sits on top of platform of sheer cliffs, paid for from taxes on the desert trade route through Rajasthan from north India to the Gujarat coast. From Mehrangarh's ramparts there are great views of the blue painted city below. Known as a city of enlightened maharajas you can now zoom on a zipline over the forts ravines and water tanks, or enjoy a private viewing of its museum with the curator in addition to the more usual sightseeing options.

Umaid Bhawan is another royal creation that can be seen from miles around. Construction of this English designed palace began in the 1920’s to create employment for the maharaja’s drought and famine struck subjects. 15 years and 347 rooms later it is the last of the great Indian palaces and remains the principal residence of the Jodhpur royal family. There’s still plenty of space for guests -  most is now a luxury hotel, or tea served, of course, by staff in jodhpurs.

The fort is the main reason to visit Jodhpur but the town itself has a relaxed atmosphere conducive to exploring, the old city is painted the most gloriously photogenic blue and the traditional, colourful market is also very worthy of a visit.

India off the beaten track - exploring Rajasthan's Villages and culture

Visit Rajasthan's villages for an immersion in old India; vibrant colours, small villages and farms, bazaars, markets, camels and bullock carts.

No visit to Rajasthan is complete without including one of its iconic cities but to find the real, rural India head off the beaten track to some of its villages and smaller towns. Red and yellow and pink and green, orange and purple and blue – and that’s just the cow horns. Rural Rajasthan is the stuff of your imagination; sweeping deserts and craggy hills, forgotten forts and fairy-tale palaces, snooty camels and wandering cows, the very essence of India all in eye-popping glorious technicolour.

After the hullabaloo of the cities the Rajasthan countryside presents a great opportunity to slow down to a pace of life no faster than a trundling bullock cart.

Our approach is to use small locally owned properties where the family has a strong relationship with the surrounding community so that you are welcomed into nearby villages. You’ll know that you’re on to a good thing when the road signs peter out, the potholes get bigger and a man on a moped is sent to meet you and show you the last secret mile to your lodgings.

With our local guide to show you the way you’ll meet tribes with eco-friendly lifestyles, discover uses for fruit and vegetables you never knew existed and loop garlands of orange marigolds around blue faced gods.

Perfect holiday from start to finish.

"Absolutely excellent service. The itinerary was spot on and the whole holiday worked like clockwork. The pre holiday notes and briefing were most useful too. I would have no hesitation in recommending Natural High Safaris to others."

Fabulous trip to Tanzania

"This is the second time we have used Natural High Safaris, and again they organised an outstanding holiday for us, this time in Tanzania, combining a safari and beach holiday that was top-notch. Highly recommend them, with huge range of experience and desire to really understand what it is their clients want - and then delivering! Thanks to Catherine Ronan."

An outstanding trip to the Himalayas superbly designed by Natural High.

"Natural High organised a 2 week family trip to Ladakh in August 2018. Andrea Hulme used her local knowledge to design an exciting trip that included a 5 day trek, white water rafting and numerous cultural visits and experiences. Their local partners Shakti were absolutely outstanding and we loved staying in the village houses as opposed to hotels. Their female Ladakhi guide Sonam was really one of the best we have every had on our travels."
