La Digue, Seychelles
Life slows right down on La Digue. With just a handful of vehicles, ox-carts and bicycles set the pace as you explore this small, unspoilt island fringed by granite boulders and pale coral sands.

La Digue, Seychelles
La Digue is the Seychelles in slow motion. With no airport, few vehicles and a road network that gives way to footpaths and sandy tracks, the island remains blissfully untouched by large-scale development. Ox-carts still roll along the lanes, bicycles lean outside pastel-painted shops, and the island’s rhythm is dictated more by the tides than the clock.
At just over 10 square kilometres, La Digue is small enough to explore easily but offers more than enough to keep you occupied. It’s home to some of the world’s most photographed beaches — including the impossibly beautiful Anse Source d’Argent — but it would be a mistake to see it as simply a beach destination. Inland, the island is a tapestry of granite hills, shady forests, and old colonial coconut plantations where giant tortoises roam and endemic birds flit between takamaka trees.
There’s a strong sense of community here, with traditional Seychellois life still very much intact. You’ll find fishermen hauling in their catch by hand, Creole houses framed by tropical blooms, and rhythmical moutya music carried on the sea breeze. For travellers in search of a slower, more authentic pace of life, La Digue offers rare simplicity with real depth — an island that leaves a mark not through its luxury, but through its spirit.
