Mahe Island, Seychelles

Mahé offers a striking blend of jungle-covered mountains, quiet coves and local life. It’s the most vibrant of the Seychelles islands, but still feels refreshingly wild and untamed.

EXPLORE

Mahe Island, Seychelles

An island of contrasts: wild interiors and vibrant coastlines

Mahé is the largest island in the Seychelles and the cultural and economic heart of the archipelago. It’s home to the capital, Victoria, but despite being the most developed of the islands, it still feels wonderfully unhurried. Mist-veiled mountains rise from the centre, covered in ancient forest and rare flora. Down below, sandy coves fringe the coastline, punctuated by dramatic granite boulders and sleepy fishing villages.

This is an island where you can split your days between salt-bleached beaches and walking trails that disappear into thick jungle. There are colourful markets, old Creole plantation houses, and tucked-away cafés where you’ll still hear Seychellois Creole spoken. While Mahé offers a touch more bustle than the outer islands, it remains firmly in step with the relaxed pace of the Seychelles.

Whether you’re seeking a base for island-hopping, a beach retreat with easy access to nature, or simply a soft place to land at the start or end of a trip, Mahé delivers. It’s the kind of place that encourages you to slow down, look around, and notice the simple, grounding pleasures of island life.

Best Time To Visit Mahe Island, Seychelles

The calmer months of April to May and October to November are a lovely time to visit Mahé – the weather is warm, the seas are gentle, and the island has a quieter feel. May to September brings the southeast trade winds, making it a drier and breezier time to explore, while December to March can be more humid with short, tropical showers. That said, rain tends to pass quickly, and even in the wetter months, there’s still plenty of sunshine between the showers.
