Moremi Game Reserve
Named after the former chief of the tribe who once lived there, Moremi Game Reserve is Botswana’s oldest conservation area, boasting spectacular wildlife and a heritage all its own.
Moremi Safaris
Centrally located in the Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve encompasses some of the most valuable ecological territory in Botswana. With a number of characterful camps and lodges within the park, the park offers fabulous game viewing and some beautiful scenery.
Quite possibly the greatest showcase for Africa’s large predators on the continent, Moremi has a long and rich history of wildlife documentary making and you’ll soon see why. With a diverse ecosystem of animals living there, there is an embarrassment of riches on offer for Moremi safari-goers. Plentiful sightings of leopard, cheetah and lion share the limelight with wild dogs, buffalo, giraffes and rhinos, which have been recently bred back into the area.
Founded in 1963, and expanded in the seventies, Moremi Game Reserve spans around 5000km². It was established by the local inhabitants who sought to find a way to preserve local wildlife while also ensuring they could continue to live on the land. From a visitor’s perspective, it looks like an enviable life, with the reserve home to the most diverse array of animals in the country, from the Big Five to more esoteric beasts like the tsessebe, chacma baboon and blue wildebeest.
It’s worth knowing that no walking or night drives are allowed within the reserve. As such, if you are keen to visit the Okavango Delta, combine your accommodation within the reserve with one or two in the equally wildlife-rich areas that surround it, which are mostly under private management.

Best time to go visit Moremi Game Reserve
From May to October, you can experience almost everything Moremi has to offer. With incredible weather and uncharacteristically resilient rivers — making the high season ideal for a canoe ride — the dry season in Moremi Game Reserve is an unforgettable experience.
Take in a game drive and witness the full majesty of a Moremi safari, as the animals make their way across the plains in search of higher ground. Alternatively, why not take to the river in a traditional mokoro, and experience the breathtaking sights of the reserve from the water.
You can see a different side to the Mokoro Game Reserve during its November to April wet season. Although conditions can be somewhat unpredictable during the low season, there’s an unbelievable amount you can enjoy during a Moremi safari at this time of year.
As with the rest of this part of the world, the wet season coincides with African summer, when the climate is at its most humid, and the bursts of rain are unlike any you’ve ever experienced. This is the point in the year when life begins again, as animals try to protect their newborn babies from predators on the prowl, and birdwatching in the reserve at its most in-demand.
