Kafue National Park camps - Kaingu Safari Lodge
Kaingu Safari Lodge
The river at Kaingu is uncommonly beautiful and while exploring its countless channels by boat or canoe you have the distinct feeling that it is just possible that no-one has ever been down this particular course, or alighted on this specific sand bank before.
Kafue is home to an astonishing variety of habitat for one park - and nowhere is this more apparent than around Kaingu where the river abruptly transforms itself from a very pleasant, large meandering single course affair into a crazy wonderland of multitudinous streams and a seemingly endless collection of islands.
Long held as a high-quality retreat for members of Lusaka's expatriate community willing to make the fairly long journey, the recent opening of the 'Spinal Road' that connects the western bulk of the park to the shores of Lake Itezhi-Tezhi over a 100kms to the south has suddenly opened up a vast area of wilderness to Kaingu. Coupled with this, the introduction of a thrice-weekly scheduled flight from Lusaka to the Kafue means Kaingu is no longer the slightly esoteric choice that it once was.
Kaingu offers the finest canoeing on the Kafue, good walking and an excellent chance of Sable for those willing to work for them in the local miombo forests.
Birders can delight that such uber-ticks as Pel's Fishing Owl, Böhm's Bee-eater and African Finfoot are a very real possibility here.
Owner-operated with an attention to detail and level of service that would put many more prominent establishments to shame, Kaingu is an excellent place to relax at the beginning or end of a Kafue-journey. The tents are spacious and beautifully appointed, set in deep shade and unusually private – each with its own verandah where it is extremely agreeable to while away the soporific midday hours watching the river flow by.
