Mana Pools National Park camps - Ruckomechi
Ruckomechi has the distinct advantage of being one of the few permanent camps in the Mana Pools area. Thus able to put down a few roots, it offers a bit more in the way of amenities than other mobile or seasonal camps which tend toward the more basic.
Located in the western part of Mana Pools on the banks of the Zambezi, this intimate “tented" camp overlooks the wide river and, beyond, the expansive views of the Rift Valley escarpment in Zambia. The ten tents are side-on and all enjoy views of river and un-landscaped bush. The cool textures of canvas, wood and stone make this an attractive and unobtrusive camp.
It’s quite hard to see how you could go wrong in Mana in terms of a wildlife experience and Ruckomechi has wisely kept it simple with the focus on the bush. Elephant regularly wonder through the camp and the river is alive with hippo and crocs and stacks of herbivores, not to mention birds. The scenic backdrops of river, escarpment and Acacia albida trees make it fairly impossible to take a bad photograph here.
As with other Zambezi destinations, you can enjoy the game watching by car, boat or on foot or even from your rather well-appointed bath-tub. In short, you can be as active or supine as you like and still not really miss out.
We recommend 3-4 night stays in Ruckomechi. If you think you may want to go for something more rustic, you may like the look of Stretch Ferreira’s Goliath Safaris. Ruckomechi fits nicely with safaris in both Zambia and Zimbabwe. You can now travel by road and boat from Lusaka to Ruckomechi via Chirundu (+/- 3hrs).
