North India and Rajasthan camps - ABN Charaidew and ABN Sukapha
ABN Charaidew and ABN Sukapha
The Charidew and Sukapha passenger boats are sister ships that offer relaxed and comfortable journeys along the Brahmaputra and Hugli rivers though the heart of rural northeast India.
Wildlife and wilderness are the main features of a cruise in Assam on the vast Brahmaputra – the river bed is often 20 or 30km across, an empty world of sand spits and water with marvellous bird life and the occasional Gangetic Dolphin. The cruises here also give access to a number of India’s National Parks, including Kaziranga, perhaps the finest of all, and Manas, a Project Tiger reserve on the border with Bhutan.
Ganges and Hugli cruises upstream from Calcutta (Kolkata) are all about visits to villages, towns, temples and monuments in a little-known but fascinating and culturally rich part of India, on foot and by cycle rickshaw as well as vehicle. The Sonepur Cattle Fair, on the banks of the Ganges in rural Bihar, is one of India’s great undiscovered spectacles, and arriving by and staying on board a boat offshore lets you visit it in comfort.
Owned and managed by the Assam Bengal Navigation Company, this Indo-British joint venture pioneered long-distance river journeys in India in 2003. Each ship is crewed by a wonderful team of gentle staff who will accompany you on daily forays into the surrounding landscape to visit cities, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries and other places of interest.
Both ships have 12 air-conditioned twin bedded cabins on the upper deck with en-suite shower room and large picture windows for enjoying views of the passing scenery. Also on the upper deck is a small open-air bar and plenty of room for reclining on a sun lounger with a cooling drink between disembarkations.
Buffet meals of Assamese (milder than most Indian cuisine) and continental dishes are shared around communal tables in the dining room on the lower deck and the maximum size group of 24 passengers is ideal for creating a friendly house party atmosphere on board. Though not luxurious, the service is kind and attentive and the Charaidew and Sukapha are the most comfortable way to travel this part of India. A variety of itineraries are available lasting from 4 to 10 nights are available and can be combined with travel to other parts of India through a network of local flights.
