North India and Rajasthan camps - Devigarh
Set high in the Aravali Hills, Devigarh brings together the best of old India with the new. For more than 200 years the fort guarded one of the three passes into the valley of Udaipur and was the royal residence of the rulers of Delwara principality until the mid-20th century when it fell derelict. Years of painstaking work by the Poddar family and many of India’s best young designers have since gone into restoring Devigarh to its original splendour and, with the addition of symapathetic contemporary design this imposing building is now an intimate and unique boutique hotel. It’s a magical place, imposingly grand with its ramparts, domes, turrets and balconies while the interiors are minimalist and modern, creating clean and uncluttered spaces – a rarity in Rajasthan.
Spread over numerous levels in something of a labyrinth the 39 suites are spacious and airy with up-to-date amenities including iPod docks on request and huge bathrooms with power showers and marble tubs.
The green marble pool is heated making it possible to swim even in even the depth of the Rajasthan winter (it’s colder at times than many imagine!) yoga on the rooftop at dawn, a wonderful L'Occitane spa and spectacular views over the Aravalli hills and the tiny Delwara village below. Meals can be taken in the chic restaurant but it’s hard to beat dining under the stars on the terrace and staff will be happy to set up private dining for families or romantic couples on request.
Located 28km from Udaipur it's a 45 minute drive to the city but for those that love a sense of history, wide open spaces and the opportunity to enjoy village walks, trekking and cycling in the hills, or even flying a kite or a spot of croquet, this is the place to be.
