North India and Rajasthan camps - Shahpura Bagh
Hidden off the usual beaten track between Jaipur and Udaipur, the lovely Shahpura Bagh makes a great stopover for those who want to discover the rural way of life that lies in between.
The 120 year old property was converted in recent years into a boutique heritage hotel with a very personal touch – the descendants of the former rulers of Shapura still live here in part of their old summer residence. Surrounded by lakes and gardens the 45 acre estate is a little oasis in Rajasthan’s dry hills and plains and guided excursions to nearby villages, walks to ancient temples and ruined forts and bird watching give an authentic insight into life in the countryside. Additional activities such as yoga, table tennis, cycling and fishing can also be arranged.
The eight guest rooms all vary in shape, size and style but have oodles of space with impossibly high ceilings and great expanses of polished limestone wall all softened with silks and cottons, handmade kilims and old Kashmiri carpets. Whenever possible, dining is al fresco, in the warm sunshine, under the shade of a tree or candlelit under the stars. It’s the ideal place to sample simple but delicious Rajasthani home-cooking (some continental dishes too) much made from vegetables from their own garden. Meals are taken in the dining room in cold weather.
Come to Shahpura for traditional hospitality and comfort, relax and recharge with a nap in a hammock and a dip in the heated pool and enjoy a taste of rural Rajasthan.
