North India and Rajasthan camps - Sujan Rajmahal Palace
Sujan Rajmahal Palace
Situated in Jaipur's oldest royal palace, this striking boutique hotel has a rich and colourful history. Built as a royal residence, Rajmahal was briefly the British Residence before being extensively remodelled in an art deco style during the 1930s and then used as the official residence of the glamorous Maharaja and Maharani of Jaipur after independence.
The newly renovated interiors are the work of leading Indian designer, Adil Ahmad with bold, fresh and vibrant colours, bespoke furniture, antique family photographs and (46 types of) custom-made wallpaper. The kaleidoscope of colour won’t be to everyone’s taste but certainly exudes modern royal style.
15 rooms and suites consist of five Palace rooms, three Palace suites, three Royal suites (of which one is a family 2 bedroom suite) and two Royal apartments (one has two bedrooms). Suites are named after their prestigious former guests, such as Queen Elizabeth II and Jackie Kennedy. All have plasma TV, i-pod docking station, en-suite bathroom with bath and separate shower as well as pillow menu and 24 hour butler service.
The hotel offers three dining options: The Collonade on the original glazed veranda; 51 Shades of Pink and The Orient Occident offering a diverse menu of European cuisine and authentic Indian recipes. Fresh herbs, vegetables, and salads come directly from the Rajmahal Palace organic kitchen garden.
The beautiful art deco swimming pool has views over the patio and extensive lawns and gardens which create an oasis of calm in busy Jaipur - although trains at the nearby railway station can occasionally be heard during both the day and night.
