Hacienda Cusin Northern Sierra Highlands

Escaping the heat and humidity of the rainforest feels like stepping into another world when you enter Ecuador’s northern sierra.

EXPLORE

Hacienda Cusin Northern Sierra

The heat and humidity of the rain forest seems like another world to Ecuador’s northern sierra. Up at 8,000 feet, surrounded by high peaks, this historical hacienda offers a cool, calm and green place to relax.

Just an hour’s drive north from Quito International Airport, you can go back in time when you stay at this 400-year-old hacienda in the highlands of the Imbabura province. With the elegant hacienda filled with art, antiques and tapestries and surrounded by gardens dotted with bougainvillea, agapanthus and Aztec lilies, it is a perfect place to unwind.

You can be as active or as sedentary as you would like, as you can sit outside in a shaded corner or inside by a fire, with plenty to see without even leaving the grounds.

There are 50 species of birds to be found in the gardens, along with llamas, peacocks, turkeys and guinea pigs in the surrounding enclosures.

Hacienda Cusin offers riding from its stables, walking, mountain-biking and cookery classes, plus the chance to play squash, basketball and volleyball or pool and table tennis in the games room.

The hacienda has been extended many times over the centuries, with the original stables turned into garden cottages and it now has a range of rooms, from four-person suites to doubles.

One of the most popular excursions is to Otavalo textile and craft market, while guided treks, including one on 15,000-foot Mount Imbabura, and a visit to Condor Park to see the rehabilitation of the Andes’ most magnificent birds are also available.
