Riding Safaris
in Botswana
One of the best ways to see the wildlife and countryside that Botswana has to offer is from the back of a beautifully schooled horse
About Riding Safaris in Botswana
No other African country compares with the wealth of space that Botswana offers. With one of the lowest population densities in the world, wildlife still thrives without the human conflict found in so many of the neighbouring countries. Riding over this vast land, be it splashing through the waters of the largest inland delta in the world, galloping over the Baobab pickled bushveld of the Tuli Block or riding out from a luxury camp on to the prehistoric salt pans of the Makgadikgadi, there is no where that offers the variety found in Botswana.
Botswana is one of Africa’s greatest conservation success stories, huge tracts of pristine land are set aside for wildlife and with numbers strictly regulated, visitors are able to get totally away from crowds. Camps and lodges are small, personalised and all somewhere on the dial between extremely comfortable and very luxurious. However despite this they have remained authentically ‘bush’, often positioned along Okavango channels or looking across game rich grasslands.
Riding here is often considered to be the best in the world. The wildlife is superb and naturally occurring in this unfenced land and the guiding and horse are truly exceptional. It is possible to combine areas of immense contrasts – from the myriad waterways and emerald green of the Delta to the bone white flatness of the Makgadikgadi where the San people, the most ancient of Africa’s tribes, still live. Those who run riding safaris here have done so for decades in most cases and know the areas in which they operate intimately, operations can be combined or one can spend a few days riding as part of a more general Botswana safari. Riding is often fast paced and exhilarating so this country lends itself to more experienced riders. For those who are looking to experience Botswana but at a lower price point, riding on the Mashatu reserve in the Tuli Block offers superb value for money.

BEST TIME FOR RIDING SAFARISIN BOTSWANA
Botswana is an excellent all-year round destination. However, the high season, June to October is the best season for wildlife-viewing in many areas with game-concentrations rising as the out-lying water dwindles. Be aware that in June and July night-time temperatures, particularly in the desert, can dip to nearly freezing – the days are generally cool, clear and very pleasant.
