Each year, as sea temperatures around the Antarctic drop, one of the world's greatest migrations begin as Humpback Whales travel 6000 km to give birth in the warm waters around the Kingdom of Tonga
Having gorged themselves on krill that thrive in the Antarctic waters during the summer months, a tribe of whales makes its way along the east coast of New Zealand to the sheltered waters of Tonga. Here the calves are born and raised between the months of July and October in preparation for the return journey to Antarctic waters.
Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you are allowed to swim with the whales, always in the company of licensed local guides. To be in close proximity to these majestic beasts in clear tropical waters is the stuff of dreams.
A female humpback whale, 50ft long and weighing more than 30 tons, swims gracefully into view, a few yards below the surface. She is so enormous that she fills my vision. Nestled protectively against her forehead, like the mascot on a car bonnet, is her calf. The pale-skinned baby is just four or five days old, still lustrous with its silvery birth sheen, but, at 16ft long and about three tons, it is already much bigger than most dolphins. The mother's broad knobbled head swells to a huge barrel-bellied body, black on top, creamy white underneath and then tapers to broad dark flukes. She looks like a 747 drifting through a blue sky with her white pectoral fins stretched out on each side like wings.”
