Trip Overview

Northern Tanzania and the Serengeti in particular, at this time of year, is buzzing with drama. Millions of wildebeest are heading north to the lush plains of southern Kenya along with many great predators in tow. All this before the wildebeest take on the rivers of the northern Serengeti.

This is a beautifully designed trip that takes you from arrival in Arusha to the stunning Ngorongoro Crater where views of the Crater are akin to nothing you have seen before. Then it’s into the action of the Northern Serengeti – you will be off the beaten track deep in the Serengeti wilderness with the unique opportunity to be on foot amongst the plethora of wildlife.

Top highlights of this itinerary

Often the best safaris involve looking beyond the obvious highlights. It’s about the exhilarating encounters that will make your heart sing. These are encounters that nobody could ever predict, but that make your safari genuinely unique.

Arusha (1 Night)
1 Night

Arusha

Arrive into Kilimanjaro Airport and retire to a comfortable lodge to refresh and relax for a night before heading out on your safari adventure.

Ngorongoro Crater & Highlands (3 Nights)
3 Nights

Ngorongoro Crater & Highlands

You’ll spend the first two days of your itinerary exploring the Ngorongoro Crater – a truly unique place that has to be seen to be believed. Formed with the collapse of a massive volcano it is a perfectly formed crater 18km across. The Crater floor is also home to most of the major East African mammal species.

Accommodation: Sanctuary Camp

Sanctuary Camp is situated in the woodlands on the Crater rim with ten classic safari tents. This camp is very comfortable and provides guests with good access to the Crater floor.

Parks & Areas

Serengeti National Park (2 Nights)
2 Nights

Serengeti National Park

Make your way into the northern regions of the famous Serengeti National Park to the heart of the action. Flying is an option at this point but often a drive through the park is a great way to take in the vast plains and all the inhabitant wildlife.

The famous river crossings

Every dry season, thousands of brave herds attempt to reach the green lush grasslands of the Mara in their annual migration. This is a truly epic spectacle with hungry crocs patiently waiting to pick up a good feed – for sheer drama and scale, this event is very hard to beat.

Seeing a crossing takes luck and patience, but regardless of where you stay having an excellent and experienced guide who knows the area like the back of his hand is critical if you are to connect with a crossing.

Unlike the Israelites crossing of The Red Sea, the Mara River crossings are not a single event, rather crossings happen throughout the dry season. Groups varying in size from a few hundred to tens of thousand cross the river in both directions between July and October in response to localized weather patterns.
