Ethiopia

Ethiopia is absolutely unique

Ethiopia is absolutely unique. Its people, culture and wildlife are different from anywhere else in Africa or in the world. It is not particularly tourist-friendly (although this is gradually changing), so visiting Ethiopia can be a bit challenging, but it is always rewarding for people who want to see something different.

Embarking on a trip to Ethiopia is not for those who are used to East and Southern African tented camps and lodges. Accommodation is sadly lacking in style and the European style food is not always what it says it is. Better to stick to the Ethiopian cuisine if you can. Having said all that, this is a formidable country filled to the brim with history, culture and beauty.

The central highlands are the heart of the ancient kingdom of Abyssinia, inhabited by the dominant Amharic speaking people. They have their own brand of Christianity, which has developed independently since the 4th century, and some of the great attractions of Ethiopia are the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and the ancient city of Gondar.

There are also stunning mountains with unique wildlife such as the Simien wolf, the walia ibex and gelada baboons. Descending from the mountains into the surrounding deserts you come across a wide variety of other cultures, from the Afars of the Danakil Depression to the Mursi of the Omo valley with their bizarre lip plates.
