Costa Rica Holidays

Tailor-made holidays to a country with astonishing wildlife diversity, rainforest, cloud forests and stunning beaches

Costa Rica is a country with full bragging rights – the highest percentage of national parks by land area in the world and one of the most peaceful places in the world as well as a biological intensity that is hard to rival.

A Costa Rica holiday may be the embodiment of ‘the sum being greater than its parts’. With an astonishing diversity of natural landscapes, it has markedly different climates in various parts of the country, each supporting entirely separate plant and animal life. Add into the mix an excellent network of roads and refreshingly un-Latin driving, it’s easy to get from one biome to another quickly and safely, moving from one comfortable and well-appointed lodge to the next.

With a Caribbean and Pacific seaboard and a centre filled with cloud forests, active volcanoes and pampas lands, it is a challenge to do the country justice on a two-week holiday. The vast rainforests of the Osa Peninsula, at the southern end of the Pacific coast, shelter the largest remaining population of jaguars and tapirs, as well as macaws and howler monkeys. The cloud forests of Monteverde are home to the rare Resplendent Quetzal and Tortugero on the Caribbean coast is where 4 species of turtle choose to nest. Adventure, beaches and wildlife summarise any Costa Rica holiday, making it a superb destination for families or couples alike.

Costa Rica with two very different coastlines and everything from cloud forests, tropical rainforests and mountains in the middle; as a result, it is possible to experience a huge range of weather during your holiday at any time of the year.

As a general rule, the dry season months from November to May brings the driest weather and warmer temperatures on the Pacific Coast - but do expect regional exceptions as each region does have its own micro-climate to understand. The Caribbean coast sees its best weather from March to September. Costa Rica sees its green season from May to June, but this can also be a lovely time to travel when the country is so lush, and the national parks are quieter.

The country’s wildlife is a huge draw for many travellers heading to Costa Rica and this may dictate your time in country. If its turtles you’d like to see, then head to Torteguero National Park during July and September when hawksbill and green turtles are in nesting season – August is best. February to April is prime time to encounter leatherback turtles. From November to January, humpback whales arrive into the warm waters off Costa Rica to mate and they can be seen even through to March while they wait to give birth. For keen birders, Costa Rica offers hugely colourful rewards – to capture the beauty of the resplendent quetzal head to the Monteverde Cloud Forest from January to July and you should be in luck.

Tailor-made family holiday in Costa Rica

As part of a 15-day itinerary, spend five days off-grid walking the peninsula from north to south - staying with local communities along the way

From a natural history perspective Costa Rica is a hugely rewarding prospect, more for the variety of wonderful fauna encountered and the quality of the experience than any single highlight – and apart from birds which are ubiquitous, colourful and often surprisingly confiding - the wildlife watching can be challenging at times. The country mammal list is an impressive 228, although half of these are bats and many of the others are nocturnal or crepuscular or spend a huge amount of time in thick cover. And then the completely unexpected happens – like a tamandua (lesser anteater) emerging out of nowhere to climb down a liana before our eyes. While a tailormade Costa Rica holiday may surprise its very unlikely to disappoint.

Continuing the odyssey that has taken us to the wildest places in Madagascar, Kenya, the Pantanal and through Uganda; travelling with Rod Tether on a superbly designed trip around Costa Rica we experienced exceptional wildlife from coastal rainforest to cloud forest. Witnessing the rehabilitation of wetlands was particularly heartening. Amazing birdlife included an astonishing 26 species of hummingbird, King Vulture and the splendidly named Montezuma’s Oropendola.”

Outstanding customer service well above the call of duty.

"Natural High arranged a trip to remember ...accommodation first class, transportation on very long road trips was excellent. Spotless . air conditioning .. food and water. Rhino and Tiger sightings to die for.. local agents left nothing to chance ... we felt in the safest hands ... then when we off grid the virus struck... Natural High and their local Agent Banyan took total control and got us from the back of beyond to UK in very worrying and uncertain times. All without us being able to do anything at our end ...outstanding attention to detail. Worth every penny."

Personal service and excellent organisation

"This was our first holiday to be organised by Natural High. We made the enquiry on New Year’s Eve for a departure in February and within a few days they had produced a wonderful-sounding itinerary in Costa Rica. There were helpful notes for packing as they seem to have someone there who has been to any chosen destination. We did do some groundwork for flights but left it to Dial-a-Flight who were also most efficient. We visited the office as it is very local to home and everyone there was cheerful and interested in our upcoming trip. We were presented with a leather file which turned out to be the most useful item en-route for all our paperwork ..... and it smelled lovely!
The holiday was one of our best ever. Not just because we saw a plethora of wildlife, but because there was always someone waiting to whisk us to another destination, be it to the airport, from the airport or a boat to a lodge etc. And they did it with great charm and humour and were always very knowledgeable about any queries we had.
For the last 8 days we had a driver/guide who was just outstanding. He was very familiar with the 3 remaining lodges where we stayed and his rapport with the other staff and guides helped to ensure that we were really well looked after. He was a skilled naturalist, had a great sense of humour and was always putting our welfare first - he made a wonderful companion for the trip.
All of the above meant that it was a really relaxing holiday so that we could maximise our time looking at the flora and fauna of Costa Rica.
We would highly recommend Natural High ...... where next?!"

Natural High nailed it again

"Sledding in Sweden was our second wonderful holiday with Natural High. From the moment you speak to them to when you get home the service and attention to detail is wonderful.
Everything is so well planned and organised that you can just sit back and really enjoy your holiday. We couldn’t recommend husky sledding in the north of Sweden more. We all agreed it was one of the best family holidays ever."
