Ecuador, which includes the Galapagos Islands, is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet.
It's home to thousands of species of bird, plant and mammal, including the endemic species of the Galapagos made famous by Charles Darwin's seminal work, the Origin of Species
Ecuador is rich in natural history and landscape; the Ecuadorian Amazon boasts almost 1000 species of fish, hundreds of mammals including jaguars, not to mention thousands of species of plants. And this is before you even consider the extraordinary endemic wildlife of the Galapagos Islands. Visit the Galapagos on a small boat charter, but be sure to combine your stay with some time on the mainland of Ecuador too.
As well as the wildlife a visit to Ecuador is a chance to experience the rich cultural history from the Pre-Inca and Inca sites to the colonial legacy of the Spanish who arrived here in the early 16th Century.
Fly into the capital Quito with the famous Cotopaxi Volcano standing on the skyline, then travel by combination of private car and guide and train, to Quenca.
Head into the extraordinary cloud forests to spend a night in a stunning tree top lodge or base yourself at a hacienda at the foot of Cotopaxi for excursions on horseback or on foot. Take in the craft markets of Otavalo with their colourful textiles and ride the remarkable Devil's Nose train with its views over precipitous mountain passes.
