Malaria-free safaris on a private game reserve

South Africa offers a number of exceptional bush homes that are wonderful for families looking for a taste of safari and a wide range of different activities to keep children busy. This ranges from game viewing to riding safaris to walks or sleeping out under the stars, all based from incredibly comfortable owner-run homes located on private ranches.

These places are hard to beat if you're looking for great hospitality in a relaxed atmosphere. Expect wonderful food cooked from fresh local ingredients and of course excellent South African wines.

take a look at a family safari itinerary

If you like the idea of relaxed small lodges, private houses and home stays, then South Africa is for you

The rolling farm land of Kwazulu Natal with its backdrop of lakes and the ever-present Drakensberg make for a seductive place to stop and spend a few days, particularly if you’re travelling with a family.

This part of South Africa is brimming with things to do – from Zulu or Boer war battlefield tours to adventures in the mountains, to white-water rafting and canoeing. But what’s also hugely pleasurable is to spend a few days slowing down and simply enjoying the relaxed hospitality that seems to come so naturally to people who live in this part of the world.

Unlike a hotel stay, many of these places are working farms so you’re more or staying with a family, albeit often in separate guest cottages.

You can expect delicious fresh food – from superlative avocados to some of the best beef you’re likely to find anywhere and of course plenty of good South African wines.

During the day you’ll often be left to your own devices, although your hosts will be happy to make suggestions as much as needed. Hospitality in these sorts of farmstays is very low key, which can make a pleasing change to the “is-everything-OK-with-your-food” mentality that can poison many hotel or restaurant experiences these days.

Perfect holiday from start to finish.

"Absolutely excellent service. The itinerary was spot on and the whole holiday worked like clockwork. The pre holiday notes and briefing were most useful too. I would have no hesitation in recommending Natural High Safaris to others."

Fabulous trip to Tanzania

"This is the second time we have used Natural High Safaris, and again they organised an outstanding holiday for us, this time in Tanzania, combining a safari and beach holiday that was top-notch. Highly recommend them, with huge range of experience and desire to really understand what it is their clients want - and then delivering! Thanks to Catherine Ronan."

An outstanding trip to the Himalayas superbly designed by Natural High.

"Natural High organised a 2 week family trip to Ladakh in August 2018. Andrea Hulme used her local knowledge to design an exciting trip that included a 5 day trek, white water rafting and numerous cultural visits and experiences. Their local partners Shakti were absolutely outstanding and we loved staying in the village houses as opposed to hotels. Their female Ladakhi guide Sonam was really one of the best we have every had on our travels."
