A cross border riding safari – traversing the bushveld of South Africa’s Waterberg and the ancient landscape of Tuli Block, Botswana.
The beautiful sure footed horses are a mix of Anglo-Arabs, Thoroughbreds and Boerperds – a hardy South African breed with a responsive and gentle temperament. They are all perfectly trained to be out on safari with the wildlife and their sole job is to look after their riders.
There are regular departure dates throughout the year. Starting with two nights at Camp Davidson on the Waterberg Horizon Ranch, a night is then spent at the tented Savannah Camp before returning for a night at Camp Davidson or an alternative camp. A five hour road transfer then takes riders to the Tuli Block in Botswana where one night is spent at the fabulous Tree House Camp followed by two nights at Two Mashatus Camp.
As you journey from camp to camp, each one unique, wild and yet very comfortable, the landscape changes, the history of the pioneers who first settled in the Waterberg is unfurled and the wildlife and bush is embraced. Evening brings conversation around the campfire with a well-earned drink and excellent bush cuisine.
The two countries and the variety of accommodation lend enormous interest to this safari – The Waterberg, the only UNESCO savannah biosphere in the world, is one of the last remaining homes of the Sable and Roan antelope. It is a stunningly beautiful area and the lack of dangerous game on the reserve allows guests to settle into the rhythm of the safari before moving on to The Tuli Block.
The Tuli is an area of panoramic views and dramatic rock formations where wildlife is prolific with huge herds of elephant, as well as numerous plains game such as zebra, eland, wildebeest and giraffe. Lion, cheetah and leopard, as well as the more elusive wild dog, also make their homes here.
The African Explorer is perfect for experienced riders.
For those wanting a small group riding safari it is superb value at around £2,500 per person for seven nights

Camp Davidson was modelled on the old ‘outspan’ camps of the great grandfather of one of the founding partners of Horizon when he was selling goods across the area from his wagon in the early 1900s. Beautiful decked canvas tents are nestled amongst the sandstone ridges overlooking grassy game-filled valleys. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom. The camp is completely run on solar energy and has a small swimming pool.
Savannah Lodge is on the south western side of the conservancy. It is a comfortable lodge with five ensuite rooms, a large sitting room and indoor and outdoor dining areas. There is a small pool and deck overlooking game-filled plains and there is a watering hole which the wildlife frequent.
Treehouse Camp is built high up a Mashatu tree on raised wooden decking. The tents are close together on a platform within the trees. This camp has shared outdoor shower and toilet facilities and has stunning views over the river. The sunsets here are unforgettable with perfect and wonderful coloured reflections in the water.
Two Mashatus Camp is nestled in the shade of two fabulously large Mashatu trees. The heart of the camp has two traditionally built Lala Palm rondavels for dining and lounge areas. Guest accommodation is in large A-frame walk-in tents set on teak platforms each with an ensuite bathroom and under the shade of a tree. There is a small swimming pool for cooling off after a day of riding and for viewing the wildlife.
