Trip Overview

El Karama Wildlife Conservancy covers 14,000 acres of private land in the foothills of Mount Kenya in one of Kenya’s most beautiful wildlife areas : the Laikipia Region.  Through a partnership with neighbouring equine experts, experienced riders can now ride in this exceptional terrain, choosing from 3 hour rides to full day to private multi day safaris with overnights in comfortable private camps.

This four night itinerary is one example of how the safaris can be put together.

Riding and Bivouacs

Meet your horses and guides and head off into the bush for your first adventure and your first taste of real excitement.

As the sun sets, and the sky is awash with all the beautiful African colours, you ride in to the stylish bush camp in time for sundowners by the open fire.

Whilst the horses get washed and cared for nearby, you can unpack, enjoy a hot bucket shower and settle into your spacious tented room. Dinner is always under the stars so you can relax in to your new bush home and soak up the atmosphere. Listen for the lion calling out and the hyena whooping in the distance.

Wake up to the fresh, cool early morning air and a steaming cup of tea or coffee and a warm homemade biscuit. With Mount Kenya in full view, and listening to the crested francolin cackling, you mount your horses and head off to look for abundant wildlife in this very private 14,000 acre conservancy.

When you start to feel peckish, a delicious bush breakfast will be served, in style. It is always such a treat!

After breakfast, you will ride amongst the plains game and explore the fig and acacia woodlands for the herd animals. You will end up near camp, by the river, for a late lunch under the fever trees. Spend the afternoon playing in the rock pools, fishing, reading, snoozing – or do a little beadwork with a local villager,  who will teach you how.

The next day, you will set off on horseback into the centre of the conservancy, crossing the river and exploring tracks that you find along the water’s edge.  You will reach the lodge just in time for lunch by the pool followed by a refreshing dip! Relax and settle in to your beautiful airy rooms with thatched roofs and why not visit the Bush Spa for a massage or calming treatment.

In the mid afternoon, after tea and cake, head off on a game drive to see another stunning part of the conservancy. After sundowners on the majestic rocks, you will search along the luggas for leopard and nearby prey. Head home to the lodge for dinner by the open fire, which wouldn’t be complete without homemade cocktails under the starry African skies.

The next day, after an early morning coffee or tea in bed listening to the nearby hippo, you mount your horses and ride past dams and over the plains where your horses can stretch their legs. A breakfast surprise awaits, followed by a wonderful morning watching elephant and buffalo and other species in the open rolling countryside.

Back to the dams to watch elephant splashing and then on to the lodge for your final day of relaxation. Choose how you would like to spend the day – a little yoga, a visit to the organic garden, a cooking lesson in the Bush Kitchen – whatever takes your fancy. Your final game drive, followed by a candlelit dinner, will complete your fabulous and exquisite El Karama experience!
