Trip Overview

El Karama Wildlife Conservancy covers 14,000 acres of private land in the foothills of Mount Kenya in one of Kenya’s most beautiful wildlife areas : the Laikipia Region.  Through a partnership with neighbouring equine experts, experienced riders can now ride in this exceptional terrain, choosing from 3 hour rides to full day to private multi day safaris with overnights in comfortable private camps.

This four night itinerary is one example of how the safaris can be put together.

Ride out in the early afternoon light and arrive into your beautiful bush camp just in time for sundowners by the open fire. Hot bucket showers while the horses get fed and cared for nearby. Unpack, settle into your spacious tented room, sit back enjoy the fire and a drink.  Dinner is always under the stars so you can settle in to your bush home, the altitude and the soak in the atmosphere. Listen for the lion calling out in the deep and the elephant over the hill.

Wake up with the dawn, have tea or coffee by the fire watching Mt Kenya in full view and listening to the crested francolin calling. Say good morning to your horses, jump on and head up towards the escarpment to look for abundant wildlife of this very private 14,000 acre conservancy. Enjoy the fresh, cool early morning air and just when you start to feel peckish, ride in to your bush breakfast. There’s no rush, take your time to explore the area on foot with the guides, learning about the plants and the trees in this part of the conservancy. Ride another few hours encountering more plains game and explore the fig trees and acacia woodland for the herd animals. End up near camp by the river for a late lunch under the fever trees. Have a wash and nap, play in the rock pools, fish, read and do a little beadwork with our room steward who will teach you how!

Pack bags into the vehicle and set off on horseback into the centre of the conservancy, crossing the river and exploring the tracks along the water and under shade. Reach the lodge just in time for a lunch by the pool and a refreshing dip! Relax and settle in to your beautiful airy rooms with thatch roofs, visit the Bush Spa for a massage or scrub. Towards the afternoon, have some tea and cake and head off in the car for a game drive to see this stunning part of the conservancy. Sundowners and bitings on the rocks
about the majestic, life giving Murera Dam listening out for the alarm calls of monkeys as Leopard stalk the luggas nearby searching for prey. Head home to the lodge for dinner by the open fire place, homemade cocktails and a BBQ under the moon

Early morning coffee or tea in your bed listening to the hippo and then back to the stables to say hello to your horses again
if you like. A Mount Kenya view ride past dams and over the plains where you and the horses can stretch your legs. A breakfast surprise under a Boscia tree awaits and a lazy morning spent exploring the views and watching oryx, elephant and buffalo in the open rolling country.

Back to the dam for Elephants swimming and then on to the lodge for your final day of relaxation.
