Rajasthan is probably the best known state in India and for some it is the very essence of the country. With its royal palaces and impregnable forts, vast deserts and magical festivals, and everyday life bursting with colour it is a natural place for many first-time visitors to begin their discovery of India.
Compiling a must-see list in Rajasthan is not easy – there are just so many fantastic things to see and do. Our own experiences have taught us not to try and do too much so that you can really enjoy and get to know the places you choose to visit. We’ll help you plan your trip, provide a car and driver at your disposal, and arrange as much or little guiding as you want to make that happen.
Wherever you go in Rajasthan you’ll find fortified legacies of the Rajputs, the warriors who give the state its name, in various states of disrepair and renovation. Amber near Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan and Jaisalmer are among the most magnificent and well-known, but we can suggest others, along less travelled roads, that we think are equally memorable.
Within the fort walls, or at least within range of their protection, are splendid palaces; Jaipur and Udaipur are the most outrageously extravagant. Best of all you can actually stay in some of them - you can live like a king in Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan, or, live with one at Deogarh Mahal.
After a burst of city life we highly recommend exploring the villages of rural Rajasthan. Though they may lack any ‘attraction’ they hold their own distinct charm and you’ll find a traditional way of life that is only slowly beginning to change.
