Mobile Safaris

On mobile safaris, the journey becomes the destination as you move with your own private camp over several days.

About Mobile Safaris

For those who want to truly experience the best of Africa’s wilderness and wildlife, there aren’t many better ways to do this than by heading off with a mobile safari camp.

In a remote wilderness far from the modern world, things we’d normally take for granted become the ultimate luxury. At the heart of this approach to travel is mobility. To explore an area properly you need to move. To move you need to be light on your feet. And to be light on your feet you need to be clever about what to take. But this is also about limiting our impact on pristine wildernesses.

Journeys like this are greater than the sum of their parts. The sense of fulfilment builds like a play in several acts, with secrets revealing themselves slowly as you cover the ground. The joy you’ll feel afterwards is truly profound – and it’s likely you’ll be hooked.

What makes a perfect mobile safari?

These are old-school safaris of the best kind. We use portable safari camps to visit areas where there are no permanent lodges and therefore few other tourists.

With true mobility comes the need for intelligent simplicity; leave behind everything you don’t need. Out goes wifi and rose-petals, in go cold drinks and simple delicious food to be prepared ingeniously over a simple bush stove.

Our Favourite Camps & Lodges

Whether you’re a seasoned explorer, a first-time adventurer, or a parent seeking a once-in-a-lifetime family trip, we can create your dream holiday filled with experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Simple but brilliant mobile camps

The style of camp varies from highly luxurious ones where you can expect Egyptian cotton sheets in large walk-in tents and trucks to move them, right down to flycamps that are little more than a bedroll under a mosquito net.

No matter the level of luxury required, we can fit the needs of your group to the destination and experience, it is all tailormade so talk to our experts to see what works. In the past we’ve even packed special lamps for guests with an interest in moths.

Mobile Safari (FAQs) Need to Know

What is the accommodation like on a mobile safari?

The only rule is that it will be temporary and portable. In all likelihood you will be sleeping under canvas, after that it’s an open book with some operators using dome tents and bedrolls, although more usual is a walk-in tent with a camp-bed. Bucket showers and a chemical loo are the norm although the occasional “thunderbox” may still be found in some quarters. Safari tents are timeless and strangely cozy, lulling you off to sleep with the noises of the African night.

Is a mobile safari suitable for young children?

They can be, depending on where you are going and what you want to see. In some cases mobile safaris are undertaken specifically to access wonderful walking country, or visit a remote, and possibly fairly hostile environment – neither of which will work for kids. A private mobile safari that gets you deep within the action of the Serengeti Wildebeest migration could however be eminently suitable for children, and a truly awesome experience for all the family.

Do I need to be fit and healthy to go on a mobile safari?

Mobile safaris in themselves are not particularly onerous – any heavy lifting will almost certainly be done for you. However you are very unlikely to run into an infinity pool or wellness centre on a mobile safari, and so if comfort and pampering is front and centre of what you are looking for on safari then it’s probably fair to say that a mobile may not be for you and we’d be better seeking out somewhere more permanent.

During the dry season, the weather is consistently warm, highlighting the beauty of any of Tanzania’s safari parks. Since permanent water within the parks dwindles, animals are forced to gather around any remaining sources. At the same time, the vegetation thins out, making it easier to see the animals. While this is particularly revelatory in Ruaha, Katavi, Tarangire, and Selous, all of Tanzania’s safari parks are worth visiting during this time.
